Flute Lessons · In-Person & Online

Music that lives
inside you
for a lifetime.

I'm a professional orchestral flutist who loves teaching just as much as performing — helping students of every level find their voice, their confidence, and their joy in music.

About me

A performer who loves to teach.

I am the Assistant Principal Flute with the North Carolina Symphony — but some of the most meaningful music-making in my life happens right here, in lessons. There's something extraordinary about watching someone discover what their instrument can do, and what they can do with it.

My approach blends rigorous classical training with genuine curiosity and warmth. I meet every student where they are: technically, musically, and emotionally. Whether you're picking up the flute for the first time or preparing for a conservatory audition, I'll design a path that's yours.

In addition to my orchestral work, I serve as an Adjunct Professor at NC State University, coach quintets, and run educational outreach programs — because I believe music belongs to everyone.

I offer lessons both in-person and online, so geography is never an obstacle to great teaching.

"Every student who walks through my door will leave with more skill, more joy, and more belief in themselves."

From students & parents...

"I simply cannot say enough great things about Mary Boone's teaching. As a professional musician, my search for the right instructor for my daughter consistently led to the same conclusion: Mary Boone. The results were immediate! Within just a few lessons, I began to notice a fullness and maturity of sound rarely heard in such young flutists. Mary's detailed, methodical, and hands-on approach has helped my daughter excel in ways I could only have dreamed of at her age. Beyond her masterful teaching, Mary is deeply invested in her students. She truly cares for them as both musicians and individuals, and is genuinely thrilled by every goal they achieve."

"As an adult learner, it can be a bit intimidating to begin a new instrument. Mary has put me at ease and given me confidence. I love that the lessons are a safe space to make mistakes. Mary is able to notice exactly where my technique is tripping me up and offer practical, bite-sized adjustments that I can easily practice at home. It has been a joy to study with her!"
